Dawn over the Waitakeres, looking west over Dominion road. The road curls and leads the viewer astray, but nature escapes artifice.

This picture stands out as being one of my earliest conceived of but most recently painted, and clearly not in New Zealand. This picture was based on a photo I took in Hokkaido after my first day ever painting En Plein Air all day long. I was freezing, my feet were numb and my nose was running, and I had never been happier. Having spent the entire day painting I felt incredibly sensitive to every colour and texture in the world around me. Rushing home to get to safety before darkness set in, I was staggered by one of the most wonderful sunsets I have ever been fortunate enough to see. The world transformed, the semi-melted slush on the road into gold, the sky a rainbow.

A libation is a ritual pouring of a liquid as an offering to a god or spirit, or in memory of those who have passed on. So it was with this picture. Although it is ostensibly a picture of the Auckland war memorial museum, I wanted to offer up the majority of the canvas to the realm of the spirit, and to try to capture something as ephemeral as Auckland weather, but as permanent as the sky above us.

Last year I travelled to Waitomo to behold its beautiful valleys and sweeping landscapes. Unfortunately we arrived there in the midst of the week of heaviest rainfall for the entire year. After despairing for a couple days, I decided to bite the bullet and just paint what I could see regardless. As I painted, a small patch of sky opened up and the first ray of sunshine touched the earth for the first time in days. I took the picture home and worked on it for a month at home. As I worked I realised the picture was a metaphor for where I was artistically at the time; awash, adrift, trying to see far yet blinded by what was in front of me, waiting to open my eyes to the inspiration that is around us all the time.

I wanted to capture the brilliance of New Zealand’s seas with this picture. The turquoise and emerald of the sea, the burnished gold of a grassy meadow parched by the sun, and the gorgeous curvature of the west coast were my inspirations for this picture.
